Gina and Jay:
"In September of 2003 I was in my early 40s and told in no uncertain terms by a very respected in-vitro specialist that not only was he quite sure, based on my various tests, that I had no chance of getting pregnant again, but also that my situation was so hopeless that he would not ‘even consider’ me for a patient in his highly regarded in-vitro practice. He ended the appointment with an off-hand comment about menopause being around the corner...We were crushed.
I went to see Dr. David a month later on a Thursday afternoon. I went alone, thinking that there was no point in dragging my partner, Jay, to yet another appointment, as we had been told that he had nothing to do with the problem and that I was the one who could no longer have kids, but also, I thought that Dr. David’s reputation was simply too good to be true and didn’t want to get Jay’s hopes up before I met the doctor myself.
The office on Park Avenue was so low key that I was afraid I might be at the wrong address. The feeling continued even as I sat down in a chair across from the doctor...until he started talking. After an extensive conversation/gathering of facts/analysis of previous test results and then a typical but thorough ob-gyn examination, Dr. David explained with a great sense of humor but also with measured confidence, optimism and encouragement that there were, in his opinion, some options to try and that we could and should start immediately, given that, he added, I would be ovulating that coming weekend. His assignment therefore had its fun part, in addition to the prescription of some low key, widely available medication. There was no repeating of previous tests, but rather, a different interpretation of the results.
In retrospect, I think that by the end of that very first examination, Dr. David already had a very good idea why I wasn’t getting pregnant. My own attitude by the time I left his office - and headed for the closest pharmacy to fill in my new prescription - had changed completeIy. When I went to see Dr. David it was because, while Jay and I had more or less accepted the in-vitro specialist’s prognosis as fact, we also wanted to leave no stone unturned. Slightly bewildered and intrigued after the long appointment with Dr. David, I now dared to hope again and decided to follow his advice precisely and immediately. I got pregnant that very weekend. The cost of the treatment was a typical course of prescribed medication, which I started taking as soon as I left his office, as well as an over-the-counter product, all of which came to under $50. Our wonderful daughter was born the next summer.
Go to Dr. David prepared to start from the beginning. Put aside all your opinions and previous conclusions about what’s going on with you and your body and be prepared to start a new slate. Follow his exact advice and do so immediately, even though you might be skeptical after so many previous tries, or bemused that it all seems much too simple and logical ( how come the previous doctors didn’t think of this or that?) or angry or tired or frustrated or confused or unconvinced. Try to remember and then tell him all, and I mean ALL the details of what’s been going on with you and your partner in the recent past, because perhaps there is another explanation! In our case, that was a crucial part of the puzzle. I won’t go as far as to say that I had been previously misdiagnosed, but I will say that clues quite plain to see had been missed or, worse, grossly misinterpreted prior to my first visit to Dr. David. In the end, they made all the difference in the world. Dr. David looks at the whole picture in a way that medicine is rarely practiced today. "
